Coimbatore : "With co-ordinated efforts, the Fall armyworm can be combated", said the District Collector to the farmers of the region through a release.

Fall armyworm is regarded to be one of the most difficult insect pests to control in maize fields. As maize farmers in Tamil Nadu are battling with the fall armyworm which causes serious leaf feeding damage as well as direct injury to the maize crop, the District Collector has issued advice to the farmers to combat the issue.

"Early detection and proper timing of an insecticide application are critical. Early detection of infestations will allow for more effective control of this pest", said the Collector in the release.

"By ploughing deeper, the worm will be exposed in the sand which inturn will attract birds to feed on them. Also, neem cakes in the soil during the last harvest, along with 10 grams of Beauveria bassiana or 10 gram dimethazine 30% (FS) to 1kg seed of maize while sowing will help address the issue", the release said.

The Collector also noted that maintaining optimal distance between the crops according to its variety, by spraying neem oil solution, traps, sowing additional crops like sunflower along with maize, removing egg nests manually, indulging in crop rotation, using biopesticide metarhizium anisopliae and by introducing egg parasites will also help combat the infestation.
